Texas Art Asylum

I've never been to The Texas Art Asylum.

This newly opened self proclaimed "part craft store, part thrift store, part salvage yard, part antique store" sounds like an artists haven. The art asylum takes in and redistributes used craft items ranging from acorns and antlers to wine bottles and yarn. There are a few things they will not take including computers and keyboards, phone books, pets or children! Seriously though, what a great idea this crafty lady had to start the art asylum. I wish her well and wish that I would have known about it before my garage sale!

Everblue Training Institute

I've never been to Everblue Training Institute.

At Everblue, you can get bpi certification to become a building analyst conducting energy auditing and energy efficiency analysis. This is important for all of our homes and becoming certified is available to anyone. Check to find courses near you. There are no prerequisites!

group running club

I've never been to a group running club.

Some of the teens at church want to start a summer running club. Now living in south Texas, you gotta get up pretty early in the morning if you want to run and survive the heat, especially in the summer. I cannot imagine teens willing to get up early in the summer, but I am willing to help and run with those that do. While there are only a few wanting to run right now, I am hoping that several of them will be joining us on our morning runs and doing a 5k run with us at the end of the summer.

credit score

I've never been to get my credit score.

I hear people talk about it and see it referred to in advertising, but I wonder if it really is important to know your credit score. I mean, although I don't know my actual credit score, I know my credit is good. We pay our bills and are nearly never late on them. We don't use credit cards. And if we do find that we have to, we pay them off as soon as possible. We don't have any outstanding loans, other than our mortgage. Isn't that the best way to make sure you have good credit?

pool tri

I've never been to a triathlon in a pool.

Tomorrow I get my first chance at a pool triathlon. We start by swimming six laps in a pool, then head out to our bikes for a fifteen mile ride. We will finish up the events with a three mile run. I don't know how I will do as far as my age group goes, but I expect to do better than I have in the past!

buying cigars

I've never been to buy cigars.

While we were on a cruise, we took a land expedition in Mexico. We ate in a local restaurant and while in there my husband kept being approached to see if he wanted to buy some cigars. Or at least one. These were not Acid cigars, but the guy trying to get us to buy did tell us they were those good Cuban cigars!

surgery

I've never been to have surgery.

But next week I am scheduled for foot surgery to remove a heel spur. I am going with a doctor who has developed a "one stitch method". This means I will be in a boot over the weekend and then in shoes by Monday! No crutches and twelve sessions of rehab. Then hopefully I will be running again before too long.

iphone accessories

I've never been to buy iphone accessories.

I don't even have an iPhone! My husband does and my son has an iTouch. I have already decided that if I ever do get one of the (in)famous toys what my first app would be. I would download the "words with friends" which is a game similar to Scrabble. Then I would be able to join in on the games with my husband and my son.

Apple Store

I've never been on a field trip to the Apple Store.

Students in K-12 classes are eligible for field trips to participating retail Apple Stores. Classes as large as 25 members can attend, and arrangements may be made for larger groups. The students can work to create something in store as part of the trip, or they can bring in a project and use the store as a theater. The kids can learn to use iPhoto, iMovie, build a website, learn how to make keynote presentations and learn how to use Garage Band. This sounds like a perfect field trip for kids of all ages!

office tests

I've never been to office testing.

Today I took some tests to see if I qualify for a summer job at our local public library. I have not had any formal testing done like that before. First I had to pass a typing test. The requirement was 30 wpm. I was nervous but have been practicing with some online typing tests. My result was 64 wpm (thanks to all my practice blogging!) Good enough. Then I had to take three basic office knowledge tests: basic arithmetic, office vocabulary and grammar and vocabulary. I missed one on the math (I think I double clicked, effectively missing a question). I got 100% on the office vocabulary and only 90% on the grammar section! There were a couple of things I truly didn’t know and some that I just flat out missed. I think I did good enough though and hopefully it will work out for me to get the library job.

buying a car for teen

I've never been to buy a car for a teen.

My friend called yesterday, and that is what her family has just done. They had shopped around for the best deal they could find on a well-maintained, safe, used car. She said it has to last through all three kids! Luckily they live in a small town. Now she just has to find out about about insuring the teen driver! My friend found the best insurance quotes came with insuring the teen on her own older car rather than on her mom's new car. She is also looking to save some money with the good student discount. Every little bit helps when insuring teen drivers! Now if we can just survive this phase….

Ride Your Bike to Work Day

I've never been to Ride Your Bike to Work Day.

This Friday, May 21, Downtown Houston will host a city wide event in celebration of Bike Month. Beginning at Memorial Park, riders will cycle to City Hall. They will gather at 7am with departure at 7:30. It would be great fun to join all those cycling to City Hall. Refreshments will also be provided.

Sri Lanka

I've never been to Sri Lanka.

Now voted as one of the top sites to visit in 2010 since the civil warring has ended. Located off India's coast, this beautiful island boasts pristine beaches, due to lack of tourists in recent years. Though devastated by the tsunami in 2004, hotels are now up and running. An international airport is under construction. There are some nice hotels providing places to relax, snorkel, and white sand beaches. And what fun to catch a glimpse of the freely roaming elephants, water buffaloes and monkeys.
