The Thrifty Scot

I've never been to the Thrifty Scot before.

As a friend and I were talking about insurance just last night, I was reminded of the necessary evil that insurance is in modern day living. Her family pays quite a bit each month for insurance. Right now, we only have one car (and one motorcycle) and our insurance has been kept reasonable.

At the Thrifty Scot, you can find all you need to know about car insurance. It seems that car insurance is one of those necessary evils. You have to have it, by law. Finding insurance is a mountainous endeavor, and hunting for car insurance is no different. At the Thrifty Scot, you can get a free quote and learn ways to help lower your insurance.

If you are a single driver or a family needing insurance, you can find what you need to know here. If you've got a teen learning to drive , it is a great time to comparison shop for car insurance.

If you can find a quote cheaper than what you pay now, take it to your existing insurance company and see if they will beat it.

Bloggers Helping Raise Funds for Schools

I've never been to a hurricane devastated area before.

This week many bloggers are pointing out the good that bloggers can do through their blogs. We can help raise money for folks in need, particularly those in the New Orleans area who are still not fully recovered from the devastation Hurricane Katrina rendered to that area. There are still supply and technology replacements that are needed by public schools. By donating , you can help these schools to purchase replacement items like computers.

Of course there are other needs that you can learn about here as well. For example, a teacher in New York is wanting to take a class field trip for underpriviledged students to a Broadway show. Or maybe you can help struggling students by donating to purchase books on tape.

There are many ways for us to help others in our "community", and as the world is getting smaller each day, our "community" is growing ever wider.

Sue's Daily Photos

I'd never been to Sue's Daily Photos before.

This is a wonderful site hosted by a certified professional photographer. She is living in Key West, Fla, and came to the US by way of Switzerland! When she retired, she thought she'd relax and take gorgeous photos and post them on the web for all of us to enjoy! :)

These photos are gorgeous. Many of them she shoots from a different perspective than you would normally see. That is one of my favorite things about some of her photos. That, and they are really pretty!

Maybe one day I'll head down to Key West and have her take a photo of my family on vacation there.

FreeCycle.org

I'd never been to FreeCycle before.

I recently learned about this great new network. It sounds like a really good thing. It is made up of people around the globe. You can sign up for free. Then you can list items you no longer want and are willing to give away for free. You will list these items in a local "neighborhood". Then others in your area can search and contact you to receive the item. It will be up to you to decide who gets the item. You can even list items for non-profit groups.

You can also search for items which you may be needing. This sounds like the perfect recycling program. It was actually started in Arizona as a way to reduce trash and help save desert landscape. This is the ultimate take on the old saying:

"One man's trash may be another man's treasure"!

Students range in age from 18-60 and spend twelve months learning the practical skills needed to run a small farm. This includes everything from tilling to rotational grazing to marketing. The program begins in the fall indoors with animal husbandry basics, land history and the necessary mathematical skills for planning the next season's crops. Once the growing season arrives, everyone is outdoors from morning til night planting and picking organic herbs and vegetables.

Orchomenos

Located about 80 miles north of Athens, this city has been the site of a recent discovery of shrine offerings. Among the offerings made to goddesses of the shrine are lamps, busts, clay pots and figures of women and animals. Chinquapin High School

I've never been to Chinquapin High School .

I just read an article about this unique high school located in Houston, TX. It is a small college prep high school which was created 38 years ago with a grant from the Brown Foundation. The school is funded on donations, and most of the students are on scholarship. What makes this school stand out from other prep schools? Most of the students come from families who live below the poverty level. But just because these kids come from poor families does not mean they cannot achieve. These students work long, rigorous hours to meet the demands of their school. This school does not do TAKS tests, has a low student to teacher ratio, and college acceptance is a requirement for graduation. CHS gives a student a classic education, and has sent graduates to places like UT, Notre Dame, and Columbia.

Russia

I've never been to Russia.

This is a land filled with history and a beauty all its own. This country is filled with museums and art gallaries, opera and ballet. From the largest lake to the highest mountain peak, Russia has much to see and do-Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Golden Ring, Novgorod the Great, Sakhalin and Kurile Island, the Trans-Siberian Railway.

But many men these days are not looking to Russia for a holiday excursion. Many men have turned to the snow covered land of Russia looking for Russian brides . Many turn to this Russian dating site, knowing that Russian women are mostly ready to settle into marriage when they begin to think of dating. For the most part, these women are brought up to seek marriage and family over career. This is very reminiscent of mail order brides.

A Staged Attack

I've never been to a staged attack.

And I hope that I never would. And I would hate for my children to undergo this type of "lesson" without prior knowledge and my prior consent.

Apparantly in Murfreesboro, TN recently, a few staff members decided that they needed to teach a group of SIXTH grade students what to do if a gunman tried to attack them. This was allegedly done without the knowledge of the parents before hand.

While on a camping trip, the students were convinced by their teachers that they were being attacked by a gunman. The teachers convincingly acted as if the attack were real, with one of them playing the part of the gunman. The shaken students were then gathered and discussed what they could do if the situation had been real.

The principal of the school declined to say whether the staff members would receive disciplinary action.

The Dog With a Blog

I've never been to a dog's blog before.

But today I noticed that Kevin the Collie had been by to visit my blog! I had to stop by and pay his blog a visit. I found his doggy blog coming out of the UK. It is filled with interesting tidbits from his dog days there. I will be showing my daughter Kevin's blog. There she can learn to make doggy bandanas. She is really wanting to help our dog do better at leash walking, so I am hoping that maybe Kevin will provide some tips on how to teach an old dog new tricks.

MyInterestingFiles

I've never been to MyInterestingFiles before.

But this blog, you gotta see! This blog is full of really interesting sights to see and places to go. And she has got some really cool pictures to help you see these great things you may never have seen. Some of these are things like a melting glacier, or the new AirBus (I'd like that for overseas travel!) or the new waterbridge in Germany.

There are also many fascinating things to see here. For example, some really unique structures using only pencils. Another of our favorites is the sidewalk art. Stop by if you want a peek at some really exclusive sights to see.

Forms4Free

I'd never been to Forms4Free before.

This website is proving to be invaluable to website and small business owners. They are providing a free HTML form for website owners and also providing a formmail file for just under $20.

This is really good news for webites that offer contact and email forms. Often, those who are creating these have little to no understanding of HTML formatting. Now Forms4Free is making this process easy. By purchasing, one time, the formmail file, you can now process the contact and email information within your own site; not using an outside source loaded with pages of advertising. This is attractive to potential customers as it is less confusing and looks more professional.

Old Fort Parker

I've never been to Old Fort Parker.

This is the fort from which Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped. She is the mother of Quanah Parker.

The fort is now restored as in pioneer times. There you can see pioneer memorabilia, a log blockhouse and stockade. Here you can learn about history of the time period. There are picnic sites. There is a active graveyard two miles away, in which you can see graves of some of the people killed during the attacks. Throughout the year there are also living history events, including Christmas, fall trailrides, and primitive skills classes and campouts.

Congress Street Bridge, Austin, TX

I've never been to the Congress Street Bridge in Austin, TX.

There each evening at sunset during the spring and summer, you can see close to one million bats in flight. They leave their beloved home, the Congress Street Bridge, to fly out in search of food. I have seen a bat flight similar to this out near Johnson City, TX, so I know that this can be an amazing sight to see. These bats can eat from 10,000-30,000 pounds of insects.

Some tips for viewing this event are: arrive early, bring a blanket and perhaps an umbrella (no, not for rain...), don't touch any bats. If you are driving through at this time, please take caution. Late summer is one of the best times to catch the viewing of this sight.

OrlandoFunTickets.com

I've never been to OrlandoFunTickets.com.

But I soon hope to give them a visit and purchase my family some Disney World Tickets . We have been planning since 2002 to go back to Disney World next year, and I intend to purchase the tickets with money I have made from blogging! So I soon hope to visit OrlandoFunTickets and purchase these passes before long.

While I am at the site, I will be sure to check out the other deals they offer. I can get tickets to lots of venues in Orlando, including all Orlando theme parks, attractions and dinner shows. This looks like it may turn out to be one-stop shopping for me!

Elisabet Ney Museum

I've never been to the Elisabet Ney Museum.

I didn't even know there was one, until just this minute! I would love to visit this museum, as the elementary school I attended was the Elisabet Ney Elementary School!

This museum is dedicated to Ms. Ney, who was a German sculptress who immigrated to Texas in the 1870's. Some of her works can be seen in a variety of places, from European palaces to the Texas and National Capitols, as well as the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art.

Art Car Parade

I've never been to the Art Car Parade.

It is a favorite, annual event in Houston, TX. There was one today, but we could not make it. There are over 250 entries each year in this unique parade. Folks decorate their cars with whimsical and outrageous designs. Then the cars are presented down a main Houston thoroughfare. This parade began in the late '80's as part of the Orange Show. There is no judging or pre-selection process. Anyone who decorates a car can be part of the rolling art show.

Deep Sea Fishing

I've never been on a deep sea fishing trip.

Living near the Gulf I know several people who have. It is a great adventure and way of relaxing for these folks. I know that they enjoy their time "away from it all".

One of the biggest things for them is finding the proper equipment to really be able to enjoy their trip and bring back some fish for frying. I don't know if any of them use Furuno fish finders, but it looks like this could be a great aid in their fishing excursions.

For any deep sea fisherman (or woman), finding discount, quality equipment can be an important first step for preparing for that deep sea fishing trip. Finding these things on line is easy at NorthWestMarineElectronics. They carry anything you might need at sea, from batteries, compasses, and binoculars, to gps devices and fish finders.

Clear Lake Greek Festival

I've never been to the Clear Lake Greek Festival before yesterday.

We went on a Friday, when it was free for homeschool families. Although the festival was rather small, we had a good time. We got to walk through the Agora-the Greek Marketplace. We saw things for sale like beaded jewelery, lovely blouses, trivets, pictures and photographs, soy candles and lots of Greek goodies.

We got to sample some great food as well. We headed first of all for the pastry stall and bought a sampler box. This contained one each of four different kinds of pastries. We all loved the kourambiedes, the one covered in powdered sugar. The baklava wasn't bad either. My son had souvlaki-marinated pork on a stick. It was pretty good. My daughter had the fried doughnuts and a tyropita-a cheese pie. I had the spanakopita-the spinach pie (spinach, feta cheese, cottage cheese and seasonings in a phyllo crust) very good. I would liked to have had more of these.

We enjoyed the beginnings of a class on Classical Greece, but unfortunantely had to leave before it was done. Perhaps we will get to attend this another time.

Search Engine Marketing for Real Estate Agents

I've never been to a Search Engine Market for Real Estate Agents.

But I have searched online data bases for a new home. These type data bases are priceless to the new home buyer. Often, the first stop for a home buyer is to search out just what is available in the area to which they are moving. We like to see what homes are selling for, and what homes are like in the area.

If you are looking for the best in real estate advertising , check with customer magnetism. They can help you to optimize your website's page ranking, increasing your visibility with potential clients. They do handle marketing for real estate agencies throughout the nation, they only work with one real estate agent per city. This will help give you a boost above your local competitors.

Located in the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, this museum showcases the history of the Republic of Texas. There are interactive exhibits, media presentations and publications. The exhibit hall depicts all of the Republic period life style, including the social, agricultural, transportation, politics and military aspects of this era. A friend of mine said that her uncle painted a mural found in one of the hall areas.

Forbidden Gardens: Katy, TX

I've never been to the Forbidden Gardens, in Katy, Tx.

Just outside Houston, TX, you can find a replication of the famous Forbidden City and its Terra Cotta soldiers. This outdoor musuem educates visitors on Chinese history, allowing them to view a 1:20 scale replica of the Forbidden City. You can see thousands of detailed miniatures of the palaces. There is also a weapons room and an architecture room. Most fantastic is the recreation of the 6,000 1/3 scale terra cotta army.

The Monex Deposit Company is providing silver and other precious metals for purchase. Silver is available in either coin or ingot form. What’s an igot you ask? Wall Street

I've never been to Wall Street.

The street apparantly got its name because of a wooden palisade set up by Peter Stuyvesant in 1653, supposedly to keep maurading Indians out. However, a street began to emerge and the name was tagged as "Wall Street". The indians never showed up and the wall was torn down, but the name stuck.

You can take a walk down Wall Street, as it has become a pedestrian only street. You can see the Federal Building where George Washington was sworn in as the first president. Also popular is the New York Stock Exchange. However, the public gallery has been closed since 9/11/01 and likely may not open back up.

Brock, TX

I've never been to Brock, TX.

I am not sure there is really much to see there. I've heard there is a great hamburger stand, that I believe doubles as a donut shop in the AM. If I am correct, there is a post office, a photographer and a library. I am guessing there is a grocery store as well.

But the real reason to go to Brock, TX would be to see our wonderful friends who moved there recently. They seem to be living in a wonderful place, filled with new adventures for them. Their boys are growing up in a happy, healthy environment. Maybe one day we will head that way to check out the town of Brock, TX.

Bryce Canyon

I've never been to Bryce Canyon.

Located in Southern Utah, it was designated a National Park because of its unique rock formations. These formations, called "hoodoos", are formed when ice and rainwater wear away the limestone. The park actually exists in three climate zones-a spruce/fir forest, a Pinyon pine/juniper forest, and a Ponderosa pine forest. The area is filled with a variety of bird, mammal and plant species. On clear days visibility can often exceed 100 miles!
