Anne Frank House

I've never been to The Anne Frank House.

This museum is located in the heart of Amsterdam. It is the house that was used by the Frank family while they were in hiding. It now houses many writings and artifacts from Anne Frank and others who were in hiding, as well as collections from those who helped them. You can see facsimiles of Anne's diary writings, as the originals are being kept for future generations. A purse that Otto brought out of the camp with him is also on display. You can learn about the business he ran as well. You can also view photographs and letters of the family.

There is another current exhibit on display called Free2Choose. It appears to be an interactive exhibit, exploring the freedoms we have and how these at times conflict with other humans and democratic societies. This display is an effort to explore the boundaries of those freedoms.

Theresienstadt

I've never been to Theresienstadt.

Also known as Terezin, this fortress city was turned into a concentration camp during WWII. It was hailed as "Hitler's gift to the Jews" and propaganda was spread (falsely) showing how the Jews were treated well by the Hitler.

We toured an exhibit on Theresienstadt yesterday. We saw drawings and writings from the children confined there. I was struck by the dedication and determination of Friedl Dicker-Brandeis (also imprisoned here) who taught the children art every day. To keep their minds off the death surrounding them, these kids looked forward to their daily art classes. They also made themselves a newspaper and magazine. We also got to see a "Ghetto" game board, depicting Terezin, fashioned after the popular game Monopoly. These kids tried to keep death and atrocity at bay using their minds and creativity.

Blueberry Brands

I had never been to Blueberry Brands before.

I need to tell my husband about this place. Each year for our church's spring retreat, he likes to order some kind of imprinted promotional products to send home with the kids as a reminder throughout the year of the lessons taught. It seems these little trinkets can at times spark a memory and help the kids make some decisions based on what they have learned.

Track Meet

I've never been to a track meet.

Basketball season is over and my son is giving a try to a new sport-track. He was not sure he would enjoy it, but he is a pretty good runner, so we've been encouraging him to give it a try. After the first practice, the coach asked him to run cross country next fall! I take that as a pretty good sign.

After one practice, he is tired and sore. It definitely takes a different approach than basketball. He will be running in his first meet this Thursday. We really do not know what to expect. I hope he does well.

Remember the Maine

I've never been to a "Remember the Maine" memorial event.

This weekend at San Jacinto Battleground, this event will take place. Tribute will be paid to honor Americans who fought in the Spanish American War. Honor is also paid to the first U.S. Navy ship to bear the name "Texas". There will be many demonstrations throughout the day. You can see arms demonstrations, including flintlocks and machine guns, visit encampments and attend the memorial service. At 3:00 today and 12:00 noon on Sunday, there will be a memorial to honor all those who have died in service to our country. This will take place on the bow of the Battleship Texas.

Green and More

I've never been to Green and More.

I like the idea behind this website. Right now, many people are interested in steps they can take to make the earth a safer place and taking care of our earth. But we often just don’t know where to start. Green and More offers some practical ways to help. If each of us took a few small steps, we would be well on our way to helping take better care of our world.

I took a look at some of Green and More’s green products. A couple particularly caught my eye. One is the biodegradable kitchen trash bag liners. I like the convenience of trash can liners and being able to use some that don’t harm the earth is even better.

The one product I really like the looks of is the reusable carry totes. I have noticed the trend of many grocery stores in our area selling reusable totes. I like the idea. I bought a couple at one store. But those totes are so small and they do not feel very sturdy. And I need a good sturdy bag when at the grocery store. Green and More offers a packet of five reusable totes made from recycled materials. Each tote holds as much as two plastic bags. The bags are said to be sturdy with reinforced seams. They even come packaged in a portable pouch. All five totes roll neatly inside. It is small enough to fit in a glove compartment. And the bags are artfully designed, giving a nice touch to your shopping experience.

Lunar and Planetary Institute Family Space Day

I've never been to the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

They are sponsoring an upcoming event on February 20. The Family Space Day will focus events for 5-8 year olds on science space topics. The next topic is eclipses. Those in attendance will actually get to view a lunar eclipse. Astronomy Society members from Johnson Space Center will be in attendance with telescopes to help attendees to get the most out of the experience. Hands on activities and resources will be available. The event is come and go, and best of all, it's FREE!

plasma tv shopping

I've never been plasma tv shopping.

It seems that right now it is the thing to have. I bet all those who watched the Superbowl on their new plasma televisions were thrilled! But what about those who realized they also should have purchased a plasma lift? Now you can find what you are looking for online. That saves you more time to stay home and watch your tv!

dance class for special needs children

I've never been to a dance class for special needs children .

I just learned of one in our area. Kennedy Dance offers a class for special needs children. It is free, and the registration charges are reduced. This class was started as an outreach to the community. I think it has offered so much to all those involved. You can take a look at this blog to find out more information and to see some of the benefits these special kids are getting.

family vacation ideas

I've never been to the San Diego zoo , or a New York city tour.

We have been working on some family vacation ideas recently. These ideas may be on the list. Finding things to do in Boston won't be hard, but six years ago, we took our kids to Disney World in Orlando. We promised them after that trip that we would save and in six years, make a trip back. Well, here it is six years later, and time to start making arrangements.

Our last trip to Orlando was filled with fun and excitement. This time I think it will be even better, as the kids are older and can do more things. We are really looking forward to the time together.

I know many folks think of Orlando as a family destination. But many couples experience romantic vacations to the magical world of Orlando. As for me, I find little things romantic. For example, where we stayed on our last trip, the closest restaurant was Hooters. My husband asked me to go pick up our hamburgers since he did not want to go in there. (No, he was not being lazy, but being a good husband.) Another time, he kept the kids at the hotel so I could go for a walk. And you know, if you time it just right, you can actually experience fireworks while kissing your husband in Orlando!

Just reminiscing about it makes me ready to pack my bags! I just found out that Trusted Tours & Attractions is offering some great deals and ideas for things to do in Orlando . I need to check on some for our trip. And just for signing up for their newsletter, I can enter to win a Canon Power Shot digital camera!

birdhouse building workshop

I've never been to a birdhouse building workshop.

There is one scheduled for Feb. 24 at Seabrook Int. school. Three classes are slated at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30. The Seabrook Tourism Committee is sponsoring this free event to encourage backyard birds in the community. You will build a birdhouse to take home.

best price toys

I've never been to best price toys.

This is a kids paradise! Toys both large and small! Toys for big kids! Toys for little kids! Toys for inside! Toys for outside!

If you are looking for that special something for those special little people in your life, check out the selection at best price toys. You will find wagons, trains, scooters, stuffed animals, easels, swing sets, pedal cars, trampolines and dolls. You can also find toy boxes to keep all the good stuff in!

pontoon boat tour

I've never been on a pontoon boat tour.

In their efforts to reconnect people with nature, the Armand Bayou Nature Center offers these pontoon boat cruises every Saturday on their 28' Ranger. You get to choose either an early morning breakfast or sunset cruise. On these guided aquatic safaris, you will be able to view local wildlife and plant life.

mature health care

I've never been to buy mature health care coverage.

We are still young enough that we do not qualify. But I know that my parents and grandparents are very interested in medicare insurance and what it can provide for them. Getting dental insurance, life insurance, long term insurance and even travel insurance is important at any age. Having the proper coverage for older adults is essential.

buying a wetsuit

I've never been to buy a wetsuit.

But when we heard that a local surf shop was closing its doors, we wanted to check into it. We particularly were interested in getting suits for the upcoming triathlon. Even though we live in a warm climate, the water in the bay is COLD in March! The race offers wet suits to rent, but buying these was cheaper than renting them at the race. I sure hope it keeps me warm!

Lone Star Sprint Triathlon

I've never been to the Lone Star Sprint Triathlon.

I have done one other sprint Triathlon (My First Triathlon) four years ago. This year, my husband, son and I are training for the Lone Star Sprint. It is called "sprint" in that it is shorter. In getting ready for this event, we have been using different exercise equipment-treadmills, exercise bikes, and kick boards in particular. It will take training with all of these to help us build the endurance we need to finish the race!

Families Exploring Down Syndrome

I've never been to Families Exploring Down Syndrome.

We have two family friends who both have a daughter with Down Syndrome. I thought of both of them, particularly the one with the younger girl, when I learned about the Greater Clear Lake Families Exploring Down Syndrome group. This group addresses issues and offers resources and support for families needing it. Monthly meetings are held (the next one Feb. 21) The upcoming meeting will focus on ARD issues. The speaker has experience as a special educator and grew up with a Down Syndrome sibling. The evening should be informative and offer some great support.

Valentine's Day Jewelry

I've never been to buy Valentine's Day jewelery.

Many people love to get and give jewelery for Valentine's Day gifts. There is much to choose from when deciding just what to give that special loved one. Ear rings (both traditional and clip on earrings), rings, bracelets, charms, necklaces and watches are all popular choices for gift giving. Maybe this Valentine's Day, you will be one of the lucky ones!

treating hyperactive dogs

I've never been to buy medication for my dog.

And I have never even considered giving our dog any kind of medication to treat "hyperactivity". My husband told me that he heard on the radio today of a new treatment for hyperactive dogs. A drug called "Poise" (he thinks that is the name) which acts on the dog like Ritalin acts on a hyperactive child. I can't believe we are allowing ourselves to control our dogs and our kids with a couple of pills everyday. What happened to good old discipline and training?

bathroom remodeling

I've never been to buy Grohe faucets.

My mom is having her bathroom re-done right now. Everything is being replaced. It has been a big job, from tearing out the wall to having the sinks replaced. I am not sure what faucets she went with, but I know that every little decision ends up being a big one. Whether purchasing tile, paint, or replacing faucets, it's always a great feeling to see the finished job well done.

World Market

I've never been to World Market.

I'd never even heard of it. But I saw today that they are building one near us. The motto said "Fifty countries, one store." I guessed it was either a market of items found around the world or maybe an international foods market. Since I did not know, I looked it up online. It looks to be a store filled with items for home decor, perhaps similar to a Pier One store.

buy auto accessories online

I've never been to buy auto accessories online.

My son turned fifteen and is ready to enroll in driver's ed and get his permit. For his birthday my parents gave him money to use as a deposit on his class, when the time comes, and one of his very first "accessories"-a basketball magnet for the outside of the car!

Mardi Gras

I've never been to Mardi Gras.

I saw on this morning's news that New Orleans is looking to have the biggest crowds this year since hurricane Katrina. Many folks have turned out for the party, parades and festivities. The weather has been warm, even though Mardi Gras was earlier this year. A movie is being filmed during this year's Mardi Gras celebration, adding to the crowd and excitement.

Galveston.com on YouTube

I'd never been to Galveston.com on YouTube before.

Just today I found the Galveston.com website has added an informational video to YouTube featuring Galveston Beaches. The video highlights East Beach, Stewart Beach and the West end beaches. We prefer the West end beaches so you park right on the beach. The sandcastle contest on East Beach is something that I would really like to check out with all its many sculptures.

business funding

I've never been to get business funding.

Many entrepreneurs and business owners must go through this. Getting funding for your business can sometimes be tough to do. Finding investors is never easy. But now you can post your needs online. Then, angel investors and venture capitalists can browse through the profiles to see just which business they would like to support. This approach will make it easier for business owners and investors to get together.

Adelaide

I've never been to Adelaide.

But my blogger friend Sire lives down under and he is starting a new blog of his home, Scenic Adelaide . It seems that he is wanting to make sure that he finds the beauty of his city and shares it with others. I love the idea and love seeing the photos he has posted so far. They are really nice. If you have always wanted to visit Adelaide but have not been able to, why not stop by and take a virtual trip with Sire?
